Airport corporation right to use caution

28 November 2008

Negotiations are in the final stages that would have an American company managing operations at the Stephenville airport. Nothing has been signed and the Stephenville Airport Corporation is treading carefully to be sure that if things don’t go as promised, control of the property would revert back to them.

The corporation feels that if the agreement works out, it could be just the stimulus the airport needs to get it moving in the right direction.

It’s no secret the airport has gone through several lean years and there are areas that need improvement, including marketing and more refueling capacity.

The U.S. company promises to address both of these issues and also attract traffic to the airport, making it more profitable.

But the corporation is right in making sure they have all angles covered before signing on the dotted line.

Those who work at the airport hope to see this new company make improvements and the corporation wants to see that too, but only under the right circumstances.

Meanwhile, the rumours and innuendoes circulating in the town aren’t helping get the deal finalized, and may even prove to be a hindrance.

The airport corporation should be left to negotiate and work out a deal that’s in the best interests of the new company, the airport’s future and the region.
